Charlbury Grove, Ealing, W5

A dilapidated rear-garden outbuilding is carefully refurbished and paired with a contemporary single-storey extension to create a new 2-bedroom, 3-person dwelling. The project makes efficient use of previously underutilised backland, bringing a new home into the depth of the existing residential plot while making the most of its garden setting. A glazed link preserves the proportions and character of the existing building, while the new extension reinterprets its brickwork, colours and material palette in a contemporary form. Generous glazing opens the living spaces onto the private garden, with a clerestory window beneath the cantilevered roof bringing daylight deep into the plan and giving the low-profile extension a greater sense of height and presence.
