Craven Avenue, Ealing W5

Whilst terraces have traditionally been defined by their uniformity, the proposed terrace introduces subtle variations in its architectural elements. These include the fenestration, the materiality of the balustrades, the brick detailing around openings and the tone of the facing brick to each facade. The overall composition keeps the coherence of a terrace, while the variations add interest to the elevations and give each dwelling a distinct character.

The eaves line, together with dormers that incorporate double-height windows, modulates the scale of the terrace and expresses the changes in level within the dwellings. At upper floor level, the gaps between the dwellings break up the massing and give the terrace the appearance of semi-detached pairs.

To the front, a part two storey element gives each dwelling a modest first floor terrace, which also forms a covered porch over the entrance below. To the rear, the first floor elements and their corner windows articulate the facade and maintain the rhythm of the terrace.
